Yiwu sits in central Zhejiang at the eastern edge of the Jinqu Basin. It is the world’s small-commodity distribution hub and a key trading city in the southern wing of the Yangtze River Delta. Yiwu’s color cosmetics industry began in the 1990s, when family-run foreign trade workshops took overseas orders and Taiwanese color cosmetics technology arrived with buyers. Early products were shipped abroad alongside handicrafts and Christmas gifts. The industry’s roots trace back to 1986, when local beauty firms grew out of family skin-cream workshops and perfume trading.

In 2024, Yiwu was awarded the title “China Cosmetics (Color Makeup) Base” by the China National Light Industry Council — the country’s first national-level base dedicated exclusively to color cosmetics — after winning the “CBC National Cosmetics Industry Base” title for three consecutive terms. By mid-2026, Yiwu had 173 licensed cosmetic producers and 57 industrial enterprises above designated size. Scaled-firm output reached 5.2 billion RMB in 2025. In 2023, total industrial output exceeded 7 billion RMB, with color makeup at 5.6 billion RMB; about 80% was exported, accounting for over one-third of China’s total color makeup exports. Yiwu now has a complete color cosmetics ecosystem spanning raw materials, packaging, filling, testing and consolidated export.
Yiwu beauty products reach more than 100 countries and regions. Customs statistics show that Yiwu’s cosmetic exports reached 7.105 billion RMB in 2025, up 20.67% year-on-year, maintaining double-digit growth for five consecutive years and accounting for 48.21% of Zhejiang’s provincial total. Industry-wide exports, including cross-provincial consolidated shipments, have exceeded 10 billion RMB, with overseas sales making up over 80% of turnover. Yiwu stands as China’s top color makeup export origin. The top five export markets in 2025 were the USA (15.55%), the UK, Brazil, Mexico and the Netherlands. The top five categories were perfumes and toilet water (23.43%), facial masks and sun care (21.11%), lip cosmetics (16.34%), eye makeup (8.80%) and pressed powder (6.44%) — covering lipsticks, eyeshadow palettes and compacts. Emerging markets grew strongly: Brazil +61.39%, Colombia +60.26%, India +34.35% and Russia +26.41% year-on-year. Yiwu also serves as a global launchpad for domestic Chinese beauty brands; the number of brands expanding overseas via Yiwu rose 22% in 2025, and Yiwu’s color makeup exports account for 18% of China’s national total in the category.
For overseas buyers, Yiwu’s key advantage is its “nationwide sourcing, consolidated mixed-container export” model. Cosmetics in Yiwu International Trade City come from factories across China. Previously, mixed LCL shipments required separate inspection at each place of origin, which delayed urgent orders. On 31 July 2025, China’s first “Inspection and Declaration at the Place of Purchase for Market Procurement Cosmetic Exports” reform launched in Yiwu. Goods from other provinces can now complete one-stop inspection and declaration in Yiwu. The maximum value per customs declaration was raised from 1,000 USD to 150,000 USD, with 24 mainstream cosmetic categories on the positive list. In the first pilot year, 1,746 export declarations were filed with total value exceeding 600 million RMB. Customs clearance time per shipment was cut by 57.2%, and costs fell by about 5,000 RMB per shipment. A total of 316 manufacturers completed filing, driving nearly 2,000 small beauty merchants into foreign trade. The “Nationwide Production + Yiwu Consolidation” model lets buyers source lipsticks, eyeshadows, makeup brushes, press-on nails and perfumes under one roof and ship them in a single full container.
Local factories handle both large long-term bulk orders and small-batch quick-response orders. Hypermarket chains, cross-border e-commerce sellers and importers from the Middle East, Latin America and Africa can place trial orders of a few hundred lipsticks or sign annual full-container contracts. OEM/ODM support covers custom shades, fragrances, bottle shapes, packaging printing, multi-language labels and gift box design; small-batch flexible production is a local core strength. Compliance support is mature: 24 categories are on the market procurement positive list, and one-stop purchase-place inspection plus one-item-one-code traceability solves the mixed-container inspection pain point. Most factories hold GMPC and ISO certification, and customs regularly sample-test heavy metals, microbial limits and other safety indicators. Sourcing tips: lock pre-production samples and color cards, batch inspection standards, delivery lead times and LCL consolidation terms into written contracts. In Yiwu, one container can be filled with an entire seasonal beauty lineup in a single stop.
